The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has unveiled its fourth annual construction technology report, with a strong emphasis on the transformative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) in the construction sector. Released on 2nd October in Washington D.C., the report aims to educate and inform ABC members about AI's potential to enhance safety, quality, and profitability in construction projects.
Matt Abeles, ABC’s Vice President of Construction Technology and Innovation, highlighted the growing curiosity among ABC contractor members regarding AI and its possible advantages. "ABC contractor members and the overall contracting community want more information on AI and how it can help them improve safety, quality and profitability—and win more work," Abeles stated. He stressed the importance of the report in providing industry leaders with examples and insights into AI's capacity to bolster the construction industry.
Patrick Irwin, Chair of ABC's Construction Technology and Innovation Committee and Chief Operating Officer at Leonard S. Fiore Inc. in Altoona, Pennsylvania, echoed Abeles' sentiments. He affirmed that the construction industry has much to gain by understanding AI and machine learning (ML), which can propel businesses forward. "The interest in AI and machine learning is vast, which is why any contractor would find value in reading this report," noted Irwin.
The report includes several components to aid contractors in navigating AI's complexities. Key among these is the AI Resource Guide, which summarises AI's foundational aspects. Additionally, it features a real-life case study from Hensel Phelps, an ABC contractor member, illustrating practical AI applications. Insights from members of the Tech Alliance and the Dodge Construction Network further enrich the document’s breadth.
The ABC AI Tech Report is a collaborative effort from the ABC National Construction Technology and Innovation Committee, crafted with input from partners, contractors, and industry figures. The report is supported by ABC's 2024-2025 Tech Alliance members, which include leading firms such as Arcoro, Autodesk Inc., BuildOps, Document Crunch, Egnyte, Field Control Analytics, Kojo, KPA, Procore, Sage, Smartapp, SmartBuild, SubHQ, Stack, and Trimble.
