This could result in significant economic setbacks, necessitating a reversion to human labour when the anticipated benefits of AI do not materialise.

Acemoglu suggests a combination of the second and third outcomes as the most likely, given the current climate of competitive fear in corporate circles. He warns that such unchecked enthusiasm might lead to a hard fall when the initial hype dissipates.

Financial data for the second quarter of the year underscores the significant investments in AI technology, with industry giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms collectively spending over $50 billion on capital expenditures, heavily focused on AI.

On the technological front, Acemoglu acknowledges advancements like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, he underscores that reliability issues and a lack of human-like discernment limit AI's capacity to replace or augment many job roles.
