Tesla Faces Delivery Challenges Amidst Rising Competition
Tesla, the globally renowned electric vehicle manufacturer led by CEO Elon Musk, has reported delivery figures that fell short of Wall Street expectations for the third quarter of the year. The company delivered 462,890 vehicles from July to September 2023, a 6.4% increase from the previous quarter. However, this number was below the forecast of 469,828 vehicles expected by analysts according to data collated by LSEG.
Tesla is now tasked with delivering a record 516,344 vehicles in Q4 to meet its 2022 annual delivery figure of 1.81 million units. Falling short could mark Tesla's first annual decline in deliveries. The shortfall is attributed to growing competition from automakers in China and Europe, along with reduced subsidies in Europe and diminishing consumer spending in China.
Competition from Chinese companies like BYD and Xpeng is intensifying. BYD delivered 443,426 battery electric vehicles in the third quarter, albeit still fewer than Tesla, as they pivot towards plug-in hybrid vehicles. Meanwhile, in Europe, BMW has overtaken Tesla's market share in the battery electric vehicle sector, based on data from Jato Dynamics.
In a bid to expand its strategic horizons, Tesla is anticipated to unveil its robotaxi concept, which focuses on AI-driven autonomous technology, at an event on 10 October in Los Angeles.
