On Tuesday, the innovative collaboration between AI training platform Mindstone and global education company Pearson announced the launch of the Pearson's Generative AI Foundations Certification. This initiative aims to enhance AI proficiency among professionals, college, and high school students, reflecting the increasing integration of artificial intelligence tools in the workplace.
With the rise of AI applications in various sectors, there is growing reliance on these technologies to improve workplace efficiency. Recent data indicates that ChatGPT boasts over a million business users, with small companies utilising AI to boost output. Moreover, one-third of workers are reported to interact with AI tools multiple times weekly. Notably, at least one survey highlighted the potential of AI to enhance productivity and generate revenue.
The newly launched certification seeks to bridge the existing gap between theoretical AI knowledge often taught in academic settings and its practical application in the workplace—a disparity acknowledged by Pearson. This certification programme is tailored to provide participants with critical skills and context needed to deploy AI efficiently and ethically within professional environments. Key areas of focus include understanding foundational AI concepts, instilling ethical guidelines, managing risks, and exploring real-world use cases. Additionally, the curriculum addresses prompt engineering, bias, and privacy concerns integral to AI application.
“Proficiency in AI tools is rapidly becoming as essential as competence in Microsoft Office,” stated Pearson and Mindstone in a joint release. This skill demand has prompted employers to expect a basic level of AI literacy from their workforce. The certification aims to set a new standard in workforce AI proficiency globally, enhancing the deployment of AI skills across various industries.
The certification is part of Pearson’s Critical Career Skills portfolio, which comprises other professional development offerings. Mindstone is set to play a pivotal role in keeping the certification up-to-date, revisiting its relevance semi-annually to accommodate emerging changes and advances in AI technology. Furthermore, Mindstone will offer training sessions designed to equip participants with the practical skills needed to obtain the certification successfully, targeting primarily non-technical staff.
Unlike similar offerings from other tech giants such as AWS and Apple, Pearson's certification places significant importance on practical applications over conceptual understanding. This approach differentiates it in an increasingly crowded field where IBM also offers a free AI fundamentals certificate, and AWS provides several certification options.
The Generative AI Foundations Certification is accessible through platforms such as Mindhub, Certiport, and Pearson VUE’s online testing service, OnVUE. The cost structure includes practice tests at $40, certification exam vouchers at $85, and additional courses priced at $95. Pearson offers opportunities for bulk rates upon inquiry.
