The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is set to host an unprecedented exhibition race at Japan's iconic Suzuka Circuit. Scheduled for the 9th and 10th of November, this event will feature a unique "Man vs Machine Showdown" as A2RL expands its presence internationally. This will mark the first time that an audience in Japan witnesses a direct competition between human ingenuity and artificial intelligence on the racetrack.
The event forms part of the Super Formula double-header season finale and has been organised in collaboration with Japan Race Promotion. The showdown will see two Super Formula racecars pitted against each other, with one vehicle driven by former Formula One racer Daniil Kvyat, while the other will operate entirely on cutting-edge autonomous technology. This race will highlight the extensive capabilities of AI algorithms and robotics that have been integrated into these high-performance vehicles.
The cars participating in the event are based on the award-winning Dallara SF23 model, a renowned vehicle in Japan's premier Super Formula racing series. In adapting this model for A2RL's event, a series of innovative sensors and systems have been employed to allow fully autonomous operation. The car boasts seven cameras, four radar sensors, three LiDAR sensors, and an advanced computational stack replacing the traditional driver.
Preparation for the 'Man vs Machine' event is well underway, with both teams actively engaged in a comprehensive test programme in Japan. This marks A2RL's second public event outside its home base. The league had its inaugural race in Abu Dhabi this April, drawing eight international teams to compete in autonomous challenges, captivating a packed audience of 10,000 spectators and competing for a significant prize pool totalling $2.25 million (£1.7 million).
Now in its second year, A2RL has established itself as the largest autonomous racing series globally and is branching out into new regions. Recently, it concluded a European testing programme that featured emerging Japanese talent Juju Noda.
