In a bid to address the widespread issue of missed appointments at GP surgeries, a new artificial intelligence (AI) software is making strides in reducing no-show rates by a significant margin. The AI system in question, known as SystmOne DNA, has already been piloted at the Trinity and Bowthorpe GP practice in Norfolk, which serves a patient population of approximately 11,000. The pilot has reportedly achieved a reduction in missed appointments by 30 per cent, a statistic that translates into hundreds of reclaimed appointments since the initiative began.
Karen Bell, the surgery manager at Trinity and Bowthorpe, expressed satisfaction with the AI's performance in enhancing appointment attendance. The system operates by analysing patient records to identify individuals who have a history of missing appointments. Once identified, it sends an automatic text reminder to the patients at 5pm on the day prior to their scheduled appointment. This timely reminder has been instrumental in decreasing the number of no-shows.
This development comes after a controversial proposal made by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in 2022, which suggested imposing a £10 fine on patients for each missed appointment. The proposal faced criticism from General Practitioners (GPs) and was subsequently shelved. The introduction of AI technology presents a non-punitive approach to addressing the same issue.
The success of the SystmOne DNA pilot in Norfolk has sparked discussions about the potential for a wider rollout of the technology.
