In an era where technology continues to revolutionise health monitoring, a Swiss startup called Aktiia has introduced a novel approach to hypertension management, a condition that affects an estimated 1.3 billion people globally. Hypertension, often dubbed the "silent killer," is a leading cause of premature mortality and a significant risk factor for conditions such as stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and dementia.
Historically, monitoring blood pressure required cumbersome and costly devices, often posing a barrier to individuals managing their health effectively. This could be set to change with Aktiia's innovative development, which aims to provide an accessible and user-friendly solution to blood pressure monitoring.
Established in Neuchatel, Switzerland, with operations extending to the United States, Aktiia has a history of specialising in blood pressure technology, notably introducing a wrist-worn sensor. However, their latest achievement goes a step further, having secured the esteemed Conformité Européene (CE) mark. This certification confirms that their new technology satisfies the European Union's stringent safety, health, and environmental requirements.
Remarkably, this innovation foregoes traditional hardware entirely. Leveraging the power of generative artificial intelligence, Aktiia has developed an application capable of recording blood pressure and heart rate using only a smartphone camera. Users simply place their fingertip on the phone's camera, and within 90 seconds, the app processes the physiological data to provide an accurate measurement.
Aktiia's CEO, Rags Gupta, described this breakthrough as transformative, emphasising its potential to shift hypertension monitoring from a hardware-centric model to a software-based solution, enabling widespread access with just a smartphone. He highlighted the significance of achieving the CE mark, reflecting compliance with the EU's new Medical Device Regulation (MDR), which necessitates rigorous clinical trials and performance validation.
At the core of this advancement is the utilisation of a proprietary dataset comprising 11 billion data points. This extensive collection stems from Aktiia's previous products and has allowed the company to fine-tune its AI algorithms to meet CE standards. The foundation models employed in the app were developed under the guidance of Dr. Josep Solà, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer. Solà, alongside Dr. Mattia Bertschi, co-founded Aktiia following a 15-year tenure at CSEM, a renowned Swiss research institute.
Since its inception in May 2018, Aktiia has raised $59.7 million through five funding rounds, with significant contributions from investors such as Molten Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Verve Ventures. The company's latest CE-certified innovation is paving the way for a 2025 market release, promising a hassle-free alternative to traditional blood pressure monitoring devices.
As the medical community eagerly anticipates the practical applications of Aktiia's technology, the broader implications suggest a potential reduction in healthcare costs and improved early detection of hypertension. By democratising access to accurate health data, Aktiia is poised to enhance the way individuals engage with their cardiovascular health.
