In a landmark development, Clearview AI has announced the debut of JusticeClearview, a pioneering facial recognition technology (FRT) product intended to assist public defenders in their efforts to exonerate individuals wrongfully accused of crimes. The announcement was made from the company’s headquarters in New York.

These have ranged from the grave — such as homicides and crimes against children — to complex financial frauds, drug trafficking, and identifying sex offenders, as well as enabling the identification of victims and missing persons. JusticeClearview marks an expanded mission for the company, focusing on supporting the justice system by providing tools for the defence side, particularly in cases of wrongful accusations.

The need for such technology is underlined by statistics from the Innocence Project, which highlight a prevalent issue where 70 percent of wrongful convictions spring from errors in eyewitness identifications. The introduction of JusticeClearview might thus represent a significant technological leap towards mitigating such errors. The system claims to offer a level of accuracy superior to human capabilities, potentially resolving misidentifications far more swiftly — sometimes in minutes compared to years.
Beyond just aiding prosecution, facial recognition's integration into Public Defender offices illustrates the technology's versatility. It can be used to identify alternative witnesses or other persons of interest, providing legal teams with crucial information that might support a defendant's case.
Clearview AI has fortified its position in the industry with its groundbreaking facial recognition technology. In January 2022, the company was awarded a U.S. patent for its unique algorithm, which has consistently exhibited exceptional performance. In the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Facial Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT), Clearview AI's algorithm achieved a top ranking within the U.S., and second globally in the 'WILD' category — known to be the most challenging aspect of the test. The algorithm demonstrated greater than 99 percent accuracy across diverse demographics, bringing a reliable and unbiased tool to the justice system.
