The newly available product offers enhanced connectivity options for enterprises that lean towards proprietary Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, rather than open-source models. Cloudera's connectors facilitate seamless integration with popular services such as Nvidia and Azure, catering to enterprises' diverse AI needs.
A distinctive feature of Cloudera's offering is the concept of 'model gardens', which allow companies to maintain a curated selection of vetted AI models for various applications. This flexibility is especially useful in organisations dealing with multiple AI-driven projects. Sanjeev Mohan, a principal at SanjMo consultancy and a former research vice president at Gartner, elaborates on the utility of model gardens. He cites examples ranging from language translation, where Google's large language model (LLM) may be advantageous, to developer productivity and customer service applications. Such a setup allows businesses to select optimal models for specific tasks, including potentially complicated code conversions like Cobol to Java.
The latest product iteration also highlights enhanced performance through support for Nvidia Neural Information Models (NIMs), which can significantly improve the efficiency of certain AI models. For example, downloading and running models like Llama 3.2 on Nvidia GPUs is a common practice, but optimising these models through Nvidia NIMs can reduce operational costs by half, as noted by Mohan.
Nvidia's partnership is a strategic move for reinforcing Cloudera's position in generative AI. Ari Lightman, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, remarks on Nvidia's dominance in the sector, pointing out their widespread influence and appeal within the technological landscape.
