At a recent AI summit held in San Francisco, Fei-Fei Li, a distinguished professor at Stanford University and a pioneering figure in the field of artificial intelligence, made headlines with her critical stance on the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Often referred to as the “Godmother of AI” due to her foundational work on the ImageNet dataset in 2006, Li has long been an advocate for the ethical and human-centred application of AI technologies.

Despite her deep involvement in AI innovation, Li expressed scepticism regarding the pursuit of AGI, a theoretical form of AI that possesses the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a broad range of subjects at a level comparable to human capability. "I come from the academic world of AI, where we follow methods and evidence,” she said. “Frankly, I don’t know what AGI means.”
