Instagram has recently encountered significant issues with its content moderation processes, resulting in widespread disruptions experienced by users of its platforms, Instagram and Threads. Over the past several days, numerous users reported losing access to their accounts, with some experiencing the disappearance of posts and unexplained account suspensions. The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, addressed these issues, attributing many of the problems to human error rather than automated systems or AI, which was initially suspected by many users.
In a post on Threads, Mosseri elaborated that the errors were principally due to human moderators making decisions without adequate context on ongoing conversations. This shortfall was partly because of a malfunction in one of the tools designed to provide necessary context to these moderators. "That’s on us," Mosseri admitted in a further clarification on the platform, acknowledging the company’s responsibility for these lapses.
Nevertheless, not all problems could be traced back to human moderators. Users have experienced a range of issues, including some having their accounts mistakenly flagged as belonging to users under the age of 13—an error seemingly outside the purview of human judgment. Even after submitting identification to prove their true age, affected users reported continued inaccessibility to their accounts. Instagram confirmed that these issues were ongoing and still under investigation.
The moderation problems further extended to users' content visibility, with reports of posts being inappropriately flagged as spam or downranked despite being from reputable individuals. For example, former Wall Street Journal tech columnist Walt Mossberg noted a drastic decline in engagement on Threads, with his likes plummeting sharply overnight. Similarly, social media strategist Matt Navarra observed a severe drop in follower growth and engagement.
In the midst of these disruptions, competitive platforms such as Bluesky have seized the opportunity to attract disheartened Instagram and Threads users. Bluesky, which competes with X (formerly Twitter) and Threads, leveraged the situation by communicating directly with users on Threads, promoting its features and updates.
While Instagram works to rectify the issues, Mosseri conveyed a commitment to improving platform safety and functionality. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, requesting continued patience and feedback from users. As of now, it remains uncertain when all the problems will be fully resolved, with Instagram admitting that a comprehensive explanation might not be forthcoming due to the complexity of the issues involved.
