Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, recently showcased its humanoid robot Optimus at the 'We, Robot' event in Burbank, California. The unveiling has drawn significant attention for its striking resemblance to Sonny, the robot in the 2004 science fiction movie "I, Robot." This likeness seems to be no accident, as indicated by the event's name, which not only alludes to Asimov’s seminal collection of sci-fi stories but also cleverly taps into popular culture.
Optimus was displayed alongside Tesla's much-anticipated Cybercab. At the event, attended by tech enthusiasts and curious onlookers, Optimus demonstrated its capability to engage in basic human interactions. Captured in a viral clip shared on social media by user @cb_doge, Optimus was seen conversing with an attendee and participating in light-hearted activities such as serving drinks and playing Rock, Paper, Scissors.
The humanoid robot, encased in a minimalist design with unspecified facial features, was also depicted in a promotional video carrying out household tasks. Tasks such as picking up parcels, watering plants, and even assisting with light kitchen duties were shown, projecting a future where such robots might seamlessly integrate into domestic life. Musk explained that the Optimus robot is designed to help with "unsafe, repetitive or boring" tasks.
Throughout the event, Musk reiterated the wide potential applications for Optimus, envisioning roles as diverse as teaching, babysitting, and simple companionship. He stated, “What can it do? It'll do anything you want." Although the robots currently work within Tesla’s factories, they are expected to see broader availability by 2026. Musk estimates the cost of Optimus robots will eventually be between $20,000 and $30,000.
The demonstration at the event included Optimus showcasing advanced motor skills by moving among attendees, engaging them directly, and even performing simple dances. Musk emphasised the importance of public interaction as a means to build trust in the robots, an aspect he sees as crucial for their eventual placement in domestic environments.
