The University of Colorado Boulder is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into educational and research environments, as demonstrated during a recent virtual showcase. Professor Michael Klymkowsky, from the department of molecular cellular and developmental biology, unveiled two AI-driven bots, Dewey and Rita, which he developed to assist students in their learning processes.
Dewey and Rita are designed to serve as intelligent tutoring systems that analyse student responses and provide feedback on instructional methods. Unlike traditional AI models like ChatGPT, these bots utilize a specific AI method known as retrieval-augmented generation, which ensures greater accuracy by referencing a well-defined knowledge base composed of curricular content, textbooks, and research papers. This approach prevents the bots from generating incorrect or misleading information by limiting their responses to topics they have been pre-trained on.
Dewey acts as an analytical tool that evaluates student answers, identifying common areas where students struggle. This allows educators to adjust their teaching strategy based on real-time student performance data. Rita, on the other hand, embodies a Socratic tutor, facilitating learning through questioning rather than mere provision of answers. It engages students actively by assessing the accuracy of responses and prompting further inquiry.
The implementation of Dewey and Rita is part of a broader movement at CU Boulder to incorporate AI across various sectors. Computer Science Professor Esther Rolf highlighted the use of geospatial machine learning, a subset of AI that analyzes geographical information. Her research team, for example, is leveraging this technology to study the environmental impact of artisanal mining and its correlation with public health, turning satellite images into actionable structural data. Their work has gained international recognition, including by the United Nations.
Beyond education and research, artificial intelligence is also being utilized in administrative functions at CU Boulder. The Office of Information Technology is piloting Microsoft’s AI tool, Copilot, to enhance efficiency in tasks such as data organisation and meeting summarisation. Feedback from a six-month trial involving 30 users is being analysed to refine the tool's implementation across campus.
The virtual event was organised by CU Boulder’s AI Community of Practice, a collective aimed at developing AI standards and guiding campus initiatives. The formation of an AI steering committee and the AI Literacy Ambassadors programme underscores the university's commitment to fostering AI literacy and innovation among its staff and students.
