Chartered Accountants Raise Concerns Over AI Regulations in Australia and New Zealand
The Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has expressed reservations concerning the Australian government's proposed mandatory regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) systems considered high-risk. In an official submission, CA ANZ highlighted ambiguities surrounding the classification of high-risk AI systems, sparking uncertainty among accountants about whether AI tools used for data analysis might fall into this category.
The organisation articulated the prevalent usage of AI by practitioners in servicing clients but cautioned that such applications usually don't align with what might be designated as high-risk under the government's framework. CA ANZ has advocated for more explicit guidance, coupled with illustrative examples, to aid in discerning the risk levels associated with various AI systems. The institution has pointed out the lack of consistent interpretation among its members regarding whether all general-purpose AI systems should automatically be deemed high-risk.
In an ongoing engagement with members and stakeholders, CA ANZ seeks a balanced, comprehensible regulatory approach. The aim is to ensure that AI guardrails for high-risk systems are not only clear but enforceable, thereby fostering an environment where technological advancements can be safely integrated into professional services.

Composable Stickers Initiative Gains Traction in Canada
In a collaborative effort to address waste management challenges, the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) and composting organisations, including the Compost Council of Canada, have reached an agreement to transition to certified compostable Price Look-Up (PLU) stickers. These stickers are used on fruits and vegetables, and the initiative aims to finalise an action plan by late 2024.
The current non-compostable PLU stickers disrupt organics recycling processes, often ending up in landfills or incineration. The initiative seeks to establish a global standard in line with international compost standards, with plans to introduce these stickers next year. This shift is seen as essential to minimizing food waste and ensuring organic materials are effectively recycled.
Trident Seafoods Continues Strategic Asset Divestment
Trident Seafoods is progressing with its asset sale strategy, with Pacific Seafood set to acquire Trident's Kodiak processing facility in Alaska. This move follows Trident's prior sales of other Alaskan facilities, part of a broader restructuring announced in late 2023.

Pacific Seafood's President and CEO, Frank Dulcich, has expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to expand operations and access diverse distribution channels. Trident's CEO, Joe Bundrant, has assured that the transition is a handover rather than a shutdown, committing to a seamless transition with Pacific Seafood overseeing future operations.
