In an interview featured in the October issue of Classic Rock magazine, Shepherd expressed his views on the potential for AI-generated music to rival compositions crafted by human artists. Shepherd believes that while AI music may never possess the depth or substance of human-created songs, there is a likelihood that audiences may grow accustomed to it over time.
Shepherd articulates his concerns by drawing parallels to trends observed in pop music, which he describes as having moved in a downward direction. According to him, the general quality of pop music might have diminished over time, yet consumers have adapted to it. He suggests that AI music could potentially follow a similar trajectory, becoming an accepted norm despite its lack of human creativity and emotion.
"We might initially find AI-created music shocking," Shepherd said, "but eventually, it could become what people come to expect and accept."
Shepherd is not the lone voice in this discourse. British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has also voiced concerns, describing AI as a threat to individuality in music. Kiwanuka argues that AI could erode the nuances that make music distinctly human. He believes that certain genres, such as soul music, thrive on their inherent imperfections and raw, unpolished qualities, which AI may find challenging to replicate.
Kiwanuka elaborated on his fears, stating, "AI terrifies me, that's for sure. While it may introduce innovative ways to approach music, I believe it's crucial to safeguard the individuality and flawed beauty that only humans can impart."
Both Shepherd and Kiwanuka emphasise the importance of maintaining human elements in music. They argue that authenticity and the imperfect nature of human artistry must be preserved and celebrated, qualities they fear could be lost in a future dominated by AI-generated content.
