Samsung is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) integration in mobile technology with a focus on enhancing user experience through predictive AI in its One UI interface. The South Korean tech giant is aiming to simplify access to frequently used settings by anticipating user actions and needs, a project underpinning an evolving relationship between users and technology where interaction becomes more intuitive.
The initiative, first highlighted in a report by South Korea's National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and detailed by ET News, seeks to enhance 'touch point' performance across popular apps such as the keyboard and camera applications within Samsung's One UI. The innovation centres around predictive AI models that monitor user interactions, to proactively bring the most useful settings to the fore, thereby reducing time spent navigating through multiple submenus.
This predictive approach might employ AI to analyse repeated taps on specific parts of an image — such as focus points or large backgrounds like skies — and subsequently suggest relevant camera settings or filters. By anticipating the user’s needs, Samsung aims to reduce manual input and make mobile devices more responsive to individual preferences.
While the enhancements promise greater efficiency, Samsung assures users that the traditional Settings menu will not be supplanted by AI technology. Until now, Samsung has no plans to replace the existing structure but is exploring ways to complement it. In a January 2024 interview with TechRadar, Patrick Chomet, Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience, articulated a vision where users might never find the need to delve into the settings menu. Chomet explained, "The phone of the future has no accessibility menu," suggesting an aspirational goal rather than an immediate overhaul.
The company's application of AI aims to intelligently adapt the user experience, making it more personalised. Chomet highlighted a potential benefit in simplifying the technological interactions for all users, including those with accessibility needs.
