Abu Dhabi is gearing up for a significant upgrade in its transportation management systems through the deployment of a highly sophisticated Multimodal Intelligent Transportation Central Platform. This ambitious project, which is designed to revolutionise traffic management across the emirate, is being supported by PTV Group, a part of Umovity, following their selection by ST Engineering Urban Solutions as a subcontractor.
The integration of this state-of-the-art platform is a major step forward for Abu Dhabi, aiming to streamline various transportation subsystems and data sources into one centralised multimodal platform. This system will enable the regional authorities to implement highly effective and coordinated multimodal transport strategies. A noteworthy component of this platform is the PTV Optima, a cutting-edge real-time short-term traffic prediction solution.
PTV Optima stands out for its ability to monitor live traffic and detect incidents effectively by integrating with Abu Dhabi’s adaptive signal control system. It utilises advanced Artificial Intelligence and dynamic traffic modeling technologies to provide precise traffic flow estimations and predictions of potential queues and delays up to an hour in advance. This predictive capacity allows operators to simulate and assess different traffic mitigation strategies within a virtual setting. As a result, the system enhances proactive traffic management, improves incident response times, and optimises traffic flow throughout the emirate.

The platform's initial focus is on road traffic management, but it is designed for scalability. Over time, additional modes of transport, including rail networks, will be incorporated. This approach aligns with Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive Transportation Mobility Management Strategy 2030. The strategy aims to enhance public transport systems, manage the expected growth in traffic, and alleviate congestion on the roads, which is essential in light of projected population increases.
This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to bolstering its transportation infrastructure in preparation for future urban development demands, effectively positioning the emirate at the forefront of transportation management innovation.
