ADNOC Expands AI-Powered Reservoir Management Technology Across Its Operations
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced a significant expansion in the deployment of its AI-based reservoir management tool, Advanced Reservoir 360 (AR360), to over 30 reservoirs within its upstream operations. This move follows a successful initial deployment earlier in 2024 at ADNOC's Bab and Umm Shaif fields, marking a milestone in the integration of advanced technology in the energy sector.
AR360 is a product of AIQ, a collaboration between ADNOC and SLB (formerly Schlumberger), developed under the framework of ADNOC's broader strategy, ENERGYai, which focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence and digital technology in its operations. The tool is designed to enhance reservoir management and optimise field development planning by incorporating AI and machine learning algorithms.
The technology aims to transform traditional methods by reducing the planning time required for reservoir management while simultaneously enhancing well life and recovery rates. It achieves this by balancing the drilling of new wells and boosting the performance of existing wells, as well as optimising injection and production volumes.
ADNOC's Upstream Executive Director, Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, emphasised the significance of this technological advancement. He described the AR360's wider implementation as a testament to ADNOC’s capability in harnessing AI and advanced technologies. Al Kindy noted that it aligns with the company's commitment to meeting global energy demand responsibly while unlocking more value from the UAE's natural resources.
Magzhan Kenesbai, acting Managing Director of AIQ, highlighted the importance of ADNOC’s extended deployment of AR360, which he sees as a validation of AIQ’s capability to significantly enhance operational efficiency across the energy sector, especially in upstream operations. Kenesbai also noted that AR360 consolidates traditional forecasting processes by functioning on a unified software platform that utilises AI, thus streamlining operations and enabling more proactive decision-making.
AR360 is seen as a groundbreaking tool that integrates disparate data sets and software platforms traditionally required for reservoir forecasting, thereby reducing time consumption and potentially increasing the accuracy and efficiency of decisions regarding reservoir management and development.
This strategic move by ADNOC not only showcases their commitment to innovation but also highlights the growing importance of digital transformation within the oil and gas industry.
