CHICAGO — Recent advancements in artificial intelligence technology are poised to revolutionise the field of vision correction surgery, specifically the use of implantable collamer lenses (ICL). Speaking at the Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day during the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting, Dr. Roger Zaldivar elaborated on the significant improvements in ICL procedures, highlighting the enhanced safety and precision offered by the addition of a central port to the lens.

Dr. Zaldivar, who holds an MSc and MBA, noted that these advancements have markedly reduced serious complications during surgery, bringing them "close to zero". He emphasised the importance of further refining the sizing methodology of ICLs to perfect surgical outcomes. The proper sizing and placement of the ICL are crucial to the success of the procedure, as the anatomical internal configuration of the eye and the final positioning of the lens can significantly impact results.

To address these challenges, Dr. Zaldivar, alongside his team, has developed an artificial intelligence program known as ICLguru. This innovative tool, created by Revai Care, utilises ultrasound and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging to predict the optimal location of the lens post-surgery, and to estimate potential lens deformation. Even with varying eye sizes, the program provides surgeons with a reliable prediction of the best possible placement scenario for the ICL.

By enhancing the precision of ICL sizing and placement, the AI tool aims to assist new surgeons in overcoming the learning curve associated with the procedure, making the process more straightforward and efficient. Dr. Zaldivar remarked on the potential of this development to advance the ICL's status in the realm of refractive vision correction, asserting that these improvements could soon establish ICLs as a standard of care in the field.

Dr. Zaldivar concluded by sharing his optimistic outlook on patient satisfaction, noting that among all his patients, those receiving ICLs report the highest levels of contentment. He projected that, due to the enhanced methodologies for sizing, ICLs are likely to become the preferred choice for vision correction procedures in the coming years.
