AI Brings Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition to Life in New Documentary
A new documentary titled "Endurance," directed by the acclaimed filmmakers Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, explores the historic Antarctic expedition led by British explorer Ernest Shackleton. The film, set to stream on Disney+ from 2nd November, integrates artificial intelligence to recreate and give voice to Shackleton's century-old diary entries, bringing a novel perspective to the narrative.
The use of AI, particularly Respeecher technology, has been a focal point of discussion among industry professionals and audiences. This technology allowed Chin and Vasarhelyi to simulate the voices of Shackleton's crew by utilising available old audio recordings. This creative approach aimed to authentically revive the explorers’ personal accounts from their perilous journey, thus enhancing the emotional resonance of the documentary.
Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi described AI as a "craft tool," drawing parallels with traditional filmmaking techniques like CGI in blockbusters or the use of IMAX by directors such as Christopher Nolan. The decision to employ AI was driven by the desire to connect audiences with the explorers' experiences directly, something that would be otherwise impossible given the time period. Beyond the recreated voices, "Endurance" utilises footage from Frank Hurley, the crew's dedicated camera operator. Hurley, a significant figure in exploration photography, documented the expedition with original film that has been re-rendered and colourised for the documentary. This approach offers viewers a more vivid and engaging depiction of the harrowing survival story that unfolded as Shackleton and his crew endeavoured to endure the harsh Antarctic conditions over a year and a half.
