Alex Van Halen Explores AI to Revive Legendary Band's Music
Alex Van Halen, co-founder and drummer of the iconic rock band Van Halen, is exploring innovative ways to continue the musical legacy of his late brother, Eddie Van Halen. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Alex discussed the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) to finish and release unreleased music left by the band.
Van Halen, known for their electrifying performances and Eddie's virtuosic guitar skills, have a vault of unreleased music. However, Alex noted that these works are largely incomplete and lack vocals, describing them as "little pieces" that alone do not constitute finished songs. To bridge this gap, Alex has considered reaching out to OpenAI to analyse Eddie Van Halen’s unique guitar style and generate new guitar solos that capture his essence.
In terms of vocals, Alex is aiming high, expressing interest in working with rock legend Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. Despite not having spoken to Plant since 1993, Alex remains hopeful about the potential collaboration. "When conditions are right, things will manifest," he told Rolling Stone.
Eddie Van Halen, who died in 2020 at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer, left an indelible mark on the music world. His son, Wolfgang Van Halen, joined the band in 2006 as a bass player and contributed to their 2012 album "A Different Kind of Truth." Following Eddie's passing, the band dissolved in 2020. Wolfgang recently shared that he does not intend to perform Van Halen’s music without his father, asserting "there's no chance" of a reunion.
The concept of using AI to continue musical legacies is not without precedent. Earlier this year, country singer Randy Travis utilised AI technology to produce a new song, following a stroke in 2013 that severely limited his speech and singing abilities. AI models were used to recreate Travis’s voice, leading to the release of a song titled "Where That Came From." The process involved sampling Travis's voice from different periods throughout his career, demonstrating the potential of AI to revive the voices and styles of iconic musicians.
