Google.org has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the U.S. government workforce in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). In its latest announcement, Google.org disclosed grants totalling $15 million, allocated to two key organisations: the Partnership for Public Service and InnovateUS. These funds form part of the $75 million AI Opportunity Fund set up by the organisation, reinforcing Google's commitment to bolstering AI proficiency within public sector environments.
The largest share, a $10 million grant, is earmarked for the Partnership for Public Service. This funding will facilitate the establishment of the Center for Federal AI, a pioneering hub with the dual purpose of fostering AI leadership and nurturing talent within the federal government. Set to commence operations in the spring of 2025, the centre is designed to spearhead numerous initiatives. Among these efforts are a federal AI leadership programme that aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of AI technologies among government leaders, and an AI internship programme aimed at immersing young talent in the principles and practicalities of AI within governmental contexts.
Complementing this is the $5 million grant awarded to InnovateUS, which will channel resources towards the upskilling of public sector workers across the United States. The goal is to equip 100,000 state and local government employees with essential AI skills. Through a combination of courses, workshops, and coaching programmes, InnovateUS endeavours to provide workers with the tools necessary to navigate and leverage AI technologies effectively in their respective roles.
Max Stier, President and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration. He equated AI to electricity in terms of its transformative potential, underscoring its pivotal role in both the public sector and broader society. Stier highlighted how Google.org's substantial investment will enhance current programming and foster innovative new approaches to enable government agencies to harness AI technologies more effectively.
