Image of Donald Trump Holding Hurricane Relief Check Debunked as AI-Generated Creation

In a recent wave of misinformation, an image purportedly depicting former President Donald Trump holding a hurricane relief check has circulated widely across social media, particularly on the platform X. The image, which shows Trump holding up a cheque ostensibly valued at $1,300 for hurricane relief, claims that he donated significantly less compared to other prominent figures such as Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Ryan Reynolds, and the band Metallica.

The image quickly drew attention, being viewed over three million times since its appearance. The accompanying text suggests that the donations from Trump were notably less generous than those from other celebrities, with Taylor Swift supposedly contributing $5 million to relief efforts.

However, this image has been conclusively debunked as artificially generated. It originally surfaced on Reddit, shared by a user known by the handle @BobbyKristina on the Enough Trump Spam channel, acclaimed for posting satirical and AI-generated images of Trump. The image in question was crafted as a piece of satire, with no grounding in factual events.

Efforts to verify the authenticity of the image confirmed it as fabricated. A content scan conducted using Hive Moderation indicated the image had a low probability of being AI-generated, although experts caution that AI detection tools can be misleading, especially if users enhance images with textures or grain to mask digital modifications.

Additionally, the image and its associated details were absent from Fox News's official platforms, including their website and verified social media accounts. A spokesperson from Fox News confirmed to Check Your Fact that the image is not genuine. Furthermore, media forensics expert Dr. Walter Scheirer from the University of Notre Dame clarified the discrepancies found in the image, pointing out nonsensical writings and inaccuracies in the rendering of both the cheque and Trump's attire, which suggested AI manipulation rather than authentic news broadcasting.

This revelation comes amidst fierce political rivalry in the 2024 presidential race, where Donald Trump is reported to be in a close contest with Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. An NBC News poll indicates a tie with both candidates receiving 48% backing from registered voters.

The release of this deceptive image underscores the evolving challenge of fake news and manipulated media, particularly those using advanced technologies like AI to create seemingly plausible but false representations. This incident highlights the importance of scrutinising sources and the verification of unusual claims, especially during the high-stakes atmosphere of a presidential election.
