KT Corporation, one of South Korea's leading telecommunications companies, has recently secured a regulatory sandbox exception for its innovative real-time voice phishing detection service. This service, which utilises advanced on-device AI technology, alerts users to potential voice phishing threats during live phone calls without the necessity of server connectivity.

The company had previously developed a technology known as the 'Voice Phishing Detection AI Agent', which enabled AI language models to identify contexts related to financial fraud within call audio in real-time. Now, the newly approved service marks a significant advancement by incorporating speaker recognition technology. This enhancement enables the system to analyse suspicious calls by comparing the caller’s voice characteristics with those of known voice phishing criminals, providing users with a warning based on the voice similarity.

The voice similarity analysis is conducted using data provided by the National Forensic Service (NFS), which extracts and supplies the necessary voice characteristics related to voice phishing. Importantly, the service operates entirely on the device, thereby protecting personal information by eliminating the need for server interaction. The NFS is collaborating with KT in this pilot project to further refine the performance of its voice phishing detection algorithms.

Lee Byung-moo, Senior Vice President of KT's Customer Experience Innovation Division, highlighted the significance of the regulatory approval, stating that it reflects KT's commitment to swiftly applying AI technology to prevent customer harm. He stressed that KT will continue to prioritise customer safety by actively spearheading the development of AI technologies for voice phishing detection.

This development represents a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat voice phishing, a form of scam that continues to be a prevalent issue. As KT advances this technology, it seeks to fortify safeguards against such fraudulent activities, enhancing security for its customers.
