Swift, the global messaging service crucial to international financial transactions, has announced an enhancement to its fraud detection capabilities through the introduction of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This development comes in response to increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by cybercriminals and aims to provide the financial sector with stronger defence mechanisms.
The announcement, made on 15th October, revealed that the AI-enhanced fraud detection service will be available to the payments sector starting in January. This rollout follows a successful pilot earlier this year and reflects extensive collaboration with banks and financial institutions worldwide.
Jerome Piens, Swift's Chief Product Officer, emphasised the need for heightened defences within the financial industry, stating, “Bad actors are using increasingly sophisticated tactics to commit financial crime, and the global financial industry needs to raise its defences higher to ensure their customers can continue to transact globally with confidence." He highlighted Swift’s longstanding history of maintaining security and resilience, noting that the new AI technology is another step in this ongoing effort.
The new AI capability is designed to enhance Swift's existing Payment Controls Service. It achieves this by employing pseudonymized data from the vast number of transactions that traverse the Swift network to identify suspicious activity, thereby enabling real-time responses. This approach marks an evolution in Swift's methodologies, transitioning from traditional rules-based detection to AI-driven insights that can adapt to the changing landscape of financial crime.
The utilisation of AI forms a part of Swift's broader initiative to collaborate with over 11,500 banks and financial institutions. The goal of this collaboration is to leverage AI's potential in addressing cross-industry challenges, particularly in the realm of fraud detection and prevention. The financial services sector estimated the total cost of fraud to be approximately USD 485 billion in 2023, underscoring the necessity for such advanced solutions.
Earlier this year, Swift embarked on a pair of AI-driven initiatives aimed at bolstering fraud prevention. These included enhancements to its payment control system and a strategic partnership with ten of the world's leading banks. This collaboration explored how AI could analyse anonymously-shared data from various sources, thereby strengthening the global financial ecosystem.
Traditional methods of detecting fraudulent activity, which largely depend on pre-set rules, have struggled to keep pace with the complex schemes devised by modern fraudsters. AI, particularly predictive and generative AI, offers significant improvements over these traditional methods. By employing machine learning and unsupervised or semi-supervised learning techniques, AI can reduce false positives and adapt to novel and subtle fraud patterns, thereby enhancing detection capabilities.
