University at Buffalo’s AI Master’s Program Sees Remarkable Growth
The University at Buffalo (UB) has reported significant expansion in its Master of Science programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with student enrolment numbers demonstrating substantial growth since its inception. This fall, 73 students have enrolled in the programme, and an additional 50 are expected to join in the upcoming semester, according to a university announcement.
The programme, which began in the spring of 2020 with a modest enrolment of just five students, has seen a surge in interest and participation. This rapid growth reflects the increasing demand for expertise in AI and related technologies, catalysed by recent developments such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.
UB’s long-standing commitment to cutting-edge technology is not new; the institution has been providing access to advanced technology education since the 1970s, when it introduced machine learning, and later pattern recognition in the 1990s. The latest expansion into AI is part of the broader strategic investments by UB and New York State aimed at bolstering AI research and educational infrastructure.
Kemper E. Lewis, the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, expressed his satisfaction with the programme's progress. "The growth of our master’s programme focusing on artificial intelligence has been nothing short of spectacular,” he stated. “It shows that we’re providing students with in-demand skills that they can use for the betterment of society.”
Supporting this growth, UB and its partners have made considerable investments. The university has hired over 200 faculty members who are engaged in AI research. Concurrently, New York State has placed considerable emphasis on responsible AI development through initiatives such as Empire AI. This $40 million statewide research consortium, initiated by Governor Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers, aims to steer AI research and education responsibly. UB is a founding member and will host the consortium's supercomputing centre, solidifying its pivotal role in AI advancements.
Additionally, the university has benefited from significant federal research grants, including $20 million for establishing the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education and another $10 million to develop the Centre for Early Literacy and Responsible AI. These resources provide UB students with valuable opportunities to engage in research projects that apply their classroom learning to practical, real-world challenges.
The Master's programme itself is structured to impart a robust understanding of AI, including essential knowledge areas such as machine learning, programming languages, deep learning algorithms, and advanced artificial neural networks over a span of 12 to 18 months. The university also offers other AI learning opportunities across its Department of Computer Science and Engineering, available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Graduates from UB’s AI programmes have found employment in leading technology firms such as Amazon Web Services, NVIDIA, Visa, Radical.AI, Salesforce, and local companies like M&T Bank and CUBRC, underscoring the programme's success in preparing students for the competitive tech job market.
