Amazon has announced the roll-out of its new AI-driven tool, Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR), which is set to streamline the process of package delivery for its drivers. This innovation is intended to significantly reduce the time and effort delivery drivers spend locating and handling parcels within their delivery vans.
VAPR utilises a system of cameras and lasers to automatically detect the packages that need to be delivered at each stop. The system then projects a green "O" on the packages designated for delivery and a red "X" on those that are not. Once the correct packages are collected by the driver, VAPR provides an audible confirmation to ensure no items are missed.
This technological advancement negates the necessity for drivers to use smartphones during the delivery process, a practice that previously required significant time sorting packages, reading labels, and verifying customer information manually. Instead, drivers simply follow the visual cues provided by VAPR, grabbing the appropriate packages and moving efficiently to their next stop.
Amazon’s Transportation team has reportedly dedicated hundreds of hours to real-world testing of VAPR, assessing its effectiveness in alleviating driver burden. Initial tests revealed a 67% reduction in the perceived physical and mental effort required by drivers and a time saving of over 30 minutes per delivery route.
VAPR is set to be implemented in 1,000 new Amazon electric delivery vans with plans for broader application depending on continued success. Given Amazon's expansive logistics network, comprised of over 390,000 drivers and more than 100,000 delivery vans operating globally, VAPR could revolutionise package delivery by saving substantial time and reducing driver workload on a vast scale.
This development comes amidst ongoing discussions about the working conditions of Amazon's delivery workforce. Past reports and legal cases have painted a challenging picture, with allegations of intense work quotas and stringent monitoring allegedly leaving employees unable to take breaks as needed. In this context, tools like VAPR, which potentially free up time in drivers' schedules, could be crucial in addressing some of these concerns by allowing for more balanced work routines.
The introduction of VAPR represents Amazon’s continuing effort to integrate advanced technology into its operations, striving for increased efficiency while potentially improving working conditions for its extensive delivery driver network.
