Apple is reportedly trailing by approximately two years in the artificial intelligence (AI) arena, according to some perspectives within the company. This insight comes from the latest edition of the Power On newsletter by journalist Mark Gurman. This revelation uncovers some of the internal challenges Apple faces as it attempts to carve out a niche in the fast-evolving world of AI technology.

In June this year, Apple debuted its Apple Intelligence feature set at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024 (WWDC24). This marked Apple’s initial foray into the burgeoning AI sector. The announcement revealed several innovative features such as AI notification summaries, enhancements to Siri offering personal context, and tools like Image Playground and Genmoji.

An intriguing aspect of Apple’s AI strategy is its reliance on high-performing on-device models. This approach necessitates devices equipped with an A17 or M1 chipset or newer, and at least 8GB of memory to operate these features. While this method ensures user privacy and reduces cloud dependency, it also imposes limitations on the volume of information the devices can process.

To bridge these limitations, Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its systems. This collaboration allows Apple to utilise OpenAI's sophisticated AI models, including support for the powerful GPT-4o across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Users can access this feature to expand their device's knowledge base.

Apple's internal research indicates that ChatGPT is about 25% more accurate than Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, and can address around 30% more queries. Despite this enhancement, some at Apple suggest that their generative AI technology lags behind industry front-runners.

Looking towards the future, Apple's strategy appears to involve a combination of catching up through self-development, hiring, or possibly acquiring companies with the necessary expertise. By 2026, it is anticipated that Apple Intelligence will be operational on all devices with screens. There is also an expectation that the iPhone SE will be updated with the A18 chip in March 2025, and that the entry-level iPad may receive an update later in 2025.

Apple benefits from a vast ecosystem of advanced devices capable of running AI models, providing a potential advantage as the company continues to develop its AI technologies. The outcome of Apple’s approach and how they plan to integrate and possibly advance their AI capability remains a topic of considerable interest.
