In a rapidly evolving employment landscape driven by artificial intelligence (AI), a new job market trend has emerged, capturing the attention of corporate entities, investors, and industry analysts alike. This development suggests that, contrary to widespread concerns about automation replacing human jobs, AI technology is actively fostering a significant number of new employment opportunities.
A study by Barclays' data science team, spearheaded by Adam Lauretig and Ryan Preclaw, has focused on dissecting the AI job market by analysing job advertisements, particularly among companies within the S&P 500. Their research highlights a pivotal distinction: not all AI roles are created equal. While over 85 per cent of these companies had advertised for AI-related positions by March 2023, mere presence in these advertisements does not convey a company's depth of engagement with AI technologies.
To garner more nuanced insights, Lauretig and Preclaw filtered job postings for specific AI capabilities such as natural language processing and computer vision, and for familiarity with software platforms like TensorFlow and Pytorch. This approach helped in identifying organisations that are not just participants in the AI trend but are substantial, sophisticated users of AI technologies.
From an investment perspective, identifying companies with a high ratio of specific AI-related roles can offer more strategic and potentially profitable exposure to AI's productivity benefits. This contrasts with direct investments in tech giants like Nvidia, which are known for their massive AI-related outputs.
Over a year of analysis showed a modestly higher performance for these AI-focused firms compared to the broader S&P 500 index. Specifically, an equal-weighted top quintile of AI 'sophisticates' yielded a return of 31.78 percent since mid-October 2023, slightly outpacing the S&P 500 Equal Weighted index's 30.16 percent.
Interestingly, there appeared to be a long-term correlation between strategic recruitment of specialised IT professionals and improved stock performance. Yet, the methodology — relying largely on the ratio of AI specialist positions to generalist positions — has produced some unconventional results. Companies like Rollins, a termite exterminator, and Fastenal, a screw manufacturer, emerged with a higher AI role concentration than tech powerhouse Meta, which paradoxically dropped out of the top quintile. Meta's overall recruitment drive diluted its specialist-to-generalist ratio to 0.23, despite its status as a major AI recruiter.
