Daze Messaging App Sees Massive Pre-Launch Success Among Gen Z
A new messaging app, Daze, has captured significant attention pre-launch, with product demo videos drawing considerable interest from a younger audience. With its innovative approach to messaging, the app offers a unique user experience that blends creativity with communication.
Daze, developed by New York-based entrepreneur Willem Simons, is designed as a freestyle messaging platform. It borrows creative elements from social media to enhance the traditional chat experience. Unlike standard messaging apps such as iMessage and WhatsApp, Daze allows users to send multi-coloured messages, attach graphics, stickers, GIFs, and even drawings to their messages. The design lets messages float across the screen, creating a dynamic and personalised chat interface reminiscent of crafting an Instagram story.
The pre-launch anticipation for Daze is notable. Its waitlist has already grown to approximately 156,000 signups, fuelled by over 48 million combined views of its demo videos on TikTok and Instagram. One TikTok video alone garnered 8 million views, underscoring the strong interest from potential users.
Simons, who previously co-founded a similar app called Muze, has positioned Daze to cater specifically to the Gen Z demographic, evident from the majority of its beta testers being aged between 13 and 22. In an early beta test phase, the app had around 1,400 invite-only users, and initial metrics are promising. Among those who have sent a message through Daze, the 60-day retention rate is reported to be over 50%.
A key aspect of Daze's development has been the integration of artificial intelligence to enhance its suite of creative tools. The app aims to incorporate more AI-based technologies to expand its capabilities further. Developed entirely in React Native, this allows for simultaneous release on both iOS and Android platforms, with the official launch set for 4 November 2023.
Willem Simons articulates Daze's vision as offering a complete messaging experience that is both practical and creatively liberating. "Our goal with Daze has been to make a feature-complete messenger that is competitive with iMessage, WhatsApp, etc., while still having a suite of really fun and creative features," Simons explained.
The New York-based startup operates with a small team of seven full-time employees and one part-time worker, with some staff members working remotely. The project has also received substantial financial backing, raising $5.7 million from notable investors including a16z, Kindred Ventures, Alpaca Ventures, and several others.
The concept for Daze evolved from an earlier iteration as a social calendar, signifying its pivot towards a more interactive and creative messaging platform. The app's fresh approach to mobile communication, focusing on user creativity, positions it distinctively in the competitive landscape of messaging services. As it prepares for its official debut, the tech world will be watching closely to see how this innovative app is received by its target audience.
