Further expanding its impact, Google's data underpins the American Forests' Tree Equity Score tool, which measures equity in tree planting and care across much of the United States and parts of the UK.
In an effort to tackle vehicular emissions, Google has rolled out Project Green Light, an AI-led programme that assists city engineers in optimising traffic signals. By reducing vehicle idling time, this project diminishes greenhouse gas emissions at busy intersections. As wildfires increasingly threaten ecosystems and human settlements alike, Google has partnered with authorities to deploy FireSat, a satellite system capable of swift wildfire detection. This system can pinpoint fires as small as a classroom within 20 minutes, thanks to advanced AI and satellite imagery, enabling a more rapid response to these incidents.
Complementing the FireSat system, Google provides real-time wildfire boundary updates on its Search and Maps platforms, with features that send timely notifications to users in affected areas. This initiative now covers 15 countries across Europe and Africa, delivering invaluable information to firefighting teams and efforts to conserve biodiversity.
