Japanese motorcyclist Ai Ogura is on the cusp of clinching the Moto2 World Championship title at the upcoming Thai Grand Prix, slated for this Sunday. Competing for MT Helmets-MSi, Ogura is currently leading the championship with 241 points. This positions him 65 points ahead of his nearest rival, Arón Canet, who rides for Fantic Racing on a Kalex bike.
With only the Buriram round and two remaining races in the championship, a maximum of 50 points can still be claimed following the Thai GP. This current lead gives Ogura a strong advantage, placing him in a favourable position to secure the championship title at this weekend's race.
For Ogura to be declared champion at the Thai GP, he needs to secure a top-five position, regardless of Canet’s finishing position. This scenario remains valid even if Canet manages to win the race. Furthermore, other competitors, namely Fermín Aldeguer of SpeedUp/Boscoscuro and Sergio García of the same team, are 66 points behind Ogura. Should either Aldeguer or García triumph in the race, Ogura would still claim the championship title if he finishes in sixth place or higher.
The emphasis on finishing positions is derived from the number of wins each rider has amassed over the season, which can impact their standing in the event of a points tie. Currently, Ogura and Aldeguer both have three wins, while Canet and García each have two. This factor remains crucial should any of these riders catch up in points to Ogura by the end of the season. Therefore, a top-five finish in Thailand would all but secure the championship for Ogura, allowing his team and fans to celebrate his triumph.
