AI Paves the Way for Innovation in Europe's Energy Sector

The ongoing transformation of the energy sector was a focal point at Enlit Europe, held recently in Milan, where experts gathered to discuss the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in driving advancements. The session, hosted by Stavros Stamatoukos, Policy Officer for Digitalisation and AI in the EU's Directorate-General for Energy, centred around AI's current applications, future prospects, and strategies for expedited growth within the energy landscape.

Among the distinguished panel members was Nicoletta Rocca, Head of Data Governance and Intelligence Delivery at Enel Global Services. Rocca highlighted the widespread integration of AI in energy operations, mentioning its utility in predicting renewable energy output and assisting field operators through generative AI technologies. She referred to AI as a "Swiss knife" in the realm of predictive maintenance, underscoring its versatility and multifunctionality.

Joao Nascimento, Global Head of Digital at EDP, echoed Rocca’s sentiments, noting his company's commitment to maximising the value extracted from its existing assets via digital strategies. The conversation further included insights from Marco Barra, CEO of Bludigit, who emphasised the revolutionary impact of AI on the energy sector and the cultural changes required for effective digitalisation.

On the technological front, Andrew Scobie, Chief Technology Officer at Enoda, elaborated on AI's capability to manage large volumes of data with speed and efficiency. This sentiment was shared by Per Christian Honningsvaag, EMEA Business Leader for Energy & Resources at Microsoft. Honningsvaag illustrated AI's potential by referencing a Microsoft project with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which processed 32 million new material candidates for battery development, distilling them to 18 viable options in a matter of days—a task that would take humans significantly longer.

Devrim Celal, Chief Marketing and Flexibility Officer at Kraken, provided insights on how AI enhances consumer engagement. Since implementing large language models for AI and machine learning training in January 2022, Kraken's customer service representatives have achieved higher accuracy in responding to customer queries.

Looking ahead, the panel delved into future pathways for AI in energy, addressing areas such as governance, financial backing, regulatory guidelines concerning customer data, cybersecurity, and the energy demands of AI technologies. Nascimento advocated for regulatory incentives rather than restrictions to spur innovation. Barra called for unified industry collaboration, while Rocca pointed to the importance of teamwork and shared strategies in advancing AI deployment.

Celal recommended regulators provide guidelines instead of imposing regulations, supporting a more flexible framework, while Honningsvaag stressed the importance of adopting a "responsible AI" approach. Summarising the session's discussions, Stavros Stamatoukos expressed optimism that the advantages of AI in energy will surpass potential challenges.

The insights gathered during this session aim to inform the EU's planned roadmap and strategy for AI in the energy sector, which will be instrumental in shaping policy and innovation under the guidance of the incoming commissioner.
