On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, the Global AI Ethics Institute (GAIEI) unveiled an opportunity for scholars and professionals engaged in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics. The think tank announced the commencement of its inaugural White Paper Prize, a prestigious award designed to recognise exceptional contributions to AI ethics literature published in the calendar year of 2024.
The GAIEI is extending an invitation to researchers, scholars, and professionals from around the globe whose original works have shed light on the ethical implications of AI technologies. The eligibility criteria for submissions require that the entries be published in esteemed mediums such as accredited journals, newspapers, magazines, or books. The body of work must also be entirely the origination of the submitting author.
The White Paper Prize carries not only recognition but also a financial incentive, with a $1000 cash award awaiting the winner. The victorious submission will be announced in January through GAIEI’s extensive publicists' network. Additionally, the winning paper will be accessible on the GAIEI website, contingent upon permission from the author and the original publication venue.
A considerable emphasis is placed on the thematic focus of the submissions. The institute has denoted "AI, ethics and the future of work" as the focal point, suggesting a preference for papers that explore these topics within a global context. This encompasses the impacts of AI on countries, particularly those in the global south or far east, or examines governance frameworks and their societal implications.
Kevin LaGrandeur, the research director of GAIEI, emphasised the significance of this initiative, noting its role in propelling the discourse on AI ethics which is indispensable given the rapid evolution of AI technologies. LaGrandeur stated, “We are thrilled to announce the first Global AI Ethics Institute White Paper prize. As leaders, companies, societies, and the world, we have to get this right. We look forward to sharing not just the winner, but the key insights we gather from thought leaders in this critical area.”
