Google Enhances Transparency in Photos App with AI Editing Disclosure
Google has announced a significant update to its Photos app, aiming to enhance transparency regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in editing photographs. The technology giant revealed that it is introducing a new feature, an AI note, on the details page of images. Starting from next week, users of the Google Photos app will notice an "AI Info" section at the bottom of the image details page. This section will credit "Google AI" for any edits facilitated by AI tools such as Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance. This feature is designed to alert users to the involvement of AI in the editing process, making them aware of both generative and non-generative AI influences on their photos.
The introduction of this feature underscores Google's commitment to transparency as outlined in its AI Principles. The company is aligning with the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, which include metadata marking to indicate the use of generative AI. By doing so, Google ensures that users can easily discern when digital manipulation has occurred, even if the editing was as subtle as using features like "Add Me" or "Best Take."
Google's push for transparency is not limited to its Photos app. Earlier this year, in March, Google implemented a similar transparency measure on its YouTube platform. YouTube creators are now required to disclose when they have used AI tools to alter their video content. Unlike captions or script generation, any AI-induced alteration in the video's visuals or sounds must be indicated to viewers, and these labels cannot be removed post-disclosure.
The company has hinted that further enhancements in transparency could be on the horizon. Google plans to continue gathering user feedback to refine and possibly expand AI disclosures.
