Historic Sotheby's Auction to Feature AI-Created Artwork Honouring Alan Turing
Sotheby’s is set to make history by auctioning a pioneering piece of art credited to Ai-Da Robot, a humanoid artist powered by artificial intelligence. The groundbreaking work, "A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing (2024)," will be available for purchase on October 31, with estimates suggesting it could fetch between $120,000 and $180,000. This event marks the first time a creation by a robot of this nature has been featured in such a prominent auction house, emphasising the growing intersection of technology and art.
The artwork pays tribute to Alan Turing, the renowned English mathematician and cryptanalyst, who is widely celebrated as a pioneer in the fields of artificial intelligence and computer science. Turing's life, however, was marred by legal prosecution in 1952 due to his homosexuality, an offence considered criminal at the time. Faced with the grim choices of imprisonment or chemical castration, Turing opted for the latter. He tragically passed away in 1954 from cyanide poisoning, a death ruled as suicide, though lingering uncertainties persist to this day.
Ai-Da Robot, the creator of the Turing portrait, is the conceptual brainchild of British gallerist Aidan Meller. Crafted to spark conversations about the role and impact of technology in society, Ai-Da employs an array of advanced tools, including cameras embedded in her eyes and mechanical limbs capable of crafting intricate artwork. She has been described as visually striking, with distinctive features such as hazel eyes and prominent lips.
Aidan Meller, Ai-Da’s creator, regards the robot as a reflection of the ever-evolving definition of what it means to be human, drawing a parallel to the works of Marcel Duchamp, who challenged preconceived notions of art. Sotheby’s has adapted to the modern age for this auction by accepting cryptocurrency for the purchase. The auction house has secured a third-party guarantee for the lot, ensuring that the sale will go through regardless of bidding outcomes. Profits from the sale, as disclosed by Meller, will be channelled back into further developments for the Ai-Da project, potentially fuelling further advances in AI and art.
