MakeMyTrip, India's prominent online travel company, is significantly investing in artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise its services, although the full financial benefits of these efforts are expected to unfold gradually. The firm has strategically expanded its AI capabilities to enhance customer interactions and streamline the travel booking process across different segments.
A critical component of MakeMyTrip's AI initiative is its virtual assistant, Myra. Originally introduced in the last quarter to handle international flight bookings, Myra has since been upgraded to manage additional components such as hotel and homestay bookings. The AI chatbot offers real-time assistance by leveraging MakeMyTrip's extensive collection of proprietary data, which includes a multitude of customer reviews. Group CEO Rajesh Magow highlighted Myra's effectiveness during an earnings call, noting that the chatbot adeptly handles flight details, date changes, and ancillary services by delivering precise and personalised responses.
In a bid to further utilise AI, the company has deployed Generative AI (Gen AI) technology to tackle complex pricing and availability queries, as well as to deliver tailored hotel recommendations. This innovation represents a significant step in MakeMyTrip's strategy to enhance customer experiences. By reducing the necessity for human intervention, particularly within the RedBus app which deals with bus bookings, the AI application has already yielded a 45% reduction in customer service agent involvement. Such efficiency gains have significantly elevated productivity.
Despite these promising early outcomes, MakeMyTrip asserts that the extensive impact of AI on its financial metrics will take a few additional quarters to fully materialise. Although the current efficiency improvements are a positive indicator, a broader effect on profitability is anticipated to emerge over time.
MakeMyTrip's AI strategy is not confined to handling customer inquiries. The company is ambitiously exploring the potential of AI in aiding comprehensive trip planning by providing more personalised recommendations. Magow expressed confidence that as these AI tools evolve and become more user-friendly, customer satisfaction and conversion rates will likely improve.
The company is also focusing on creating a cohesive and integrated travel experience known as the "connected trip experience." This system enables users to conveniently book a range of products and services related to their travel itineraries through a single platform. This strategic move aims to enhance customer convenience and to leverage MakeMyTrip's data science capabilities to increase cross-sell and upsell opportunities.
Financially, MakeMyTrip reported robust results for the quarter ending September 30, 2024, with revenue hitting $211 million, marking a substantial 25% increase from the previous year’s equivalent period. The adjusted operating profit also witnessed an impressive growth of 33% year-on-year, reaching $37.5 million. Magow attributed this revenue surge to strong travel demand within India, both on domestic and international fronts, despite some short-term challenges such as heavy rainfall impacting travel momentum.
As MakeMyTrip continues to embed AI into its operations, the company remains optimistic about the future, foreseeing AI’s role as pivotal in transforming the travel service landscape and boosting its long-term financial performance.
