One of the standout features introduced by Midjourney is its image retexturing mode. This innovative function uses artificial intelligence to estimate the shape of the scene within an image, subsequently 'retexturing' it to apply new lighting, materials, and surfaces. Users can manage these editing actions via text prompts and by selecting specific regions within the image, adding a layer of intuitive interaction to the editing process.
David Holz, the founder of Midjourney, highlighted the versatility of the new image editor, noting its compatibility with several advanced editing functions. Users can personalise models, reference styles and characters, and employ image prompting to refine edits. Holz also mentioned ongoing tests for a more sophisticated AI moderator, aimed at enhancing the experience by providing nuanced evaluations of the user inputs, images, painting masks, and output images.
The initiative is currently in its early rollout and testing phase, being made available exclusively to select users with Yearly memberships or those who have been long-term subscribers. Specifically, it targets members with at least one year of subscription or those who have created a minimum of 10,000 images. This phased release, while ensuring a controlled deployment, notably restricts access to potential new users who may have been awaiting such features to join the platform.
Midjourney’s new tools draw comparison to those offered by Vizcom, a popular choice among automotive styling studios for conceptualisation and ideation tasks. However, as Midjourney functions as a browser-based platform, considerations around data security arise since it lacks the SOC 2 Type II compliance for safeguarding confidential materials, unlike Vizcom.
As the company continues to refine these tools, the integration of AI moderation and personalised editing promises to shape the future capabilities accessible to the Midjourney community.
