This summer, a trial of AI-powered weapons scanners manufactured by Evolv was conducted across 20 subway stations in New York City, with the aim of bolstering security and deterring criminal activity. Despite scanning over 2,700 passengers during the pilot's 30-day period, the scanners did not detect any firearms. The trial, overseen by Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD, identified only 12 knives but generated 118 false positive alerts, sparking criticism from civil rights groups who have labelled the initiative "objectively a failure."

The deployment, which took place without any formal contract or payment to Evolv, has drawn skepticism from both the public and specialists in civil liberties. Mayor Adams, who has been an advocate for integrating technology into public safety measures, introduced the scanners as part of a strategic push to modernise the city’s law enforcement infrastructure, including drones and robotic devices. The Evolv system has encountered legal hurdles, including investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as a lawsuit from a student who was stabbed with a knife not detected by the system.

Amidst the controversy, City Hall has maintained that the pilot's objective was not merely to detect weapons but also to discourage potential threats. A spokesperson for the mayor emphasised that public safety remains paramount and that the pilot results are still under review, leaving open the possibility of engaging other vendors.
