In a fascinating collaboration between technology, literature, and theatre, playwright Akhtar embarks on an innovative project with his play "McNeal." The creative process behind this work required an unconventional approach, as Akhtar aimed to capture the essence of artificial intelligence-generated text. By utilising various AI programs, such as GPT, Gemini, and Claude, Akhtar experimented extensively. He fed these programs with scenes and tasked them with rewriting the content in different styles to authentically simulate AI-written text.
However, Akhtar soon encountered the inherent limitations of these AI tools. Programs refused to generate text that breached their content policies, including sensitive topics such as descriptions of suicide or incest. This limitation became a unique plot point within the play, shaping the narrative in unexpected directions.
Satisfied with his draft, Akhtar presented it to his agent, who proposed Robert Downey Jr. for the lead role. Known for his portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and more recently for an Oscar-winning performance in "Oppenheimer," Downey's involvement would be a significant coup. Initially, both Akhtar and Downey were sceptical. Downey had not graced a theatre stage since his appearance in "American Passion" in 1983. That performance was met with mixed reviews and saw the show close the very day it debuted.
Yet, Downey's reluctance was overcome by the encouragement of his wife, producer Susan Downey, who insisted he give the play a reading. According to Downey, it took merely 22 pages of "McNeal" to change his mind. The depth and uniqueness of the content convinced him to return to theatre, bringing back to the stage an actor of considerable acclaim.
The fusion of artificial intelligence with traditional theatrical elements in "McNeal," combined with Downey's involvement, promises a reinvigorated interest in theatre.
