Swift, the global payments network, has announced the introduction of an innovative artificial intelligence-powered fraud detection service set to go live in January 2025. This development is part of an ongoing effort to enhance security measures across the financial sector and tackle the growing incidence of financial crime.

This forthcoming service will extend Swift’s security infrastructure by utilising advanced AI technology to scrutinise pseudonymised data from billions of transactions conducted annually across its network. The system aims to identify and flag potentially fraudulent activities in real-time, thereby allowing financial institutions to respond swiftly and effectively to potential threats.

This new initiative builds on the existing Payment Controls Service offered by Swift, which is currently geared towards small and medium-sized financial institutions. The decision to expand upon this service is in response to an alarming trend of increasing financial fraud, with industry estimates suggesting losses of approximately $485 billion in 2023.

Jerome Piens, Swift’s Chief Product Officer, remarked on the urgency of enhancing fraud defences given the elaborate tactics employed by criminals. "Bad actors are using increasingly sophisticated tactics to commit financial crime," Piens noted. He emphasised the importance of bolstering the financial industry's defences to ensure that customers can continue to engage in global transactions with security and confidence.

The AI-powered service has undergone rigorous testing through successful pilot programs conducted with banks in diverse regions including Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. These trials have underscored the system’s capability to improve fraud detection and have been pivotal in refining the technology before its global launch.

By integrating cutting-edge AI into its operations, Swift is positioning itself at the forefront of technological advancement within the financial services industry. The move underscores Swift’s commitment to not only keeping pace with digital threats but also anticipating and countering them proactively.

The launch of this service marks a significant step forward in the ongoing battle against financial crime, promising to deliver robust safeguards for banks and financial institutions worldwide. As the industry braces for further digital transformation, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to the evolving landscape of financial crime, highlighting the critical role of technology in enhancing transaction security.
