Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to forge its way into the realm of storytelling, a space traditionally dominated by human creativity. Recent research shows that AI, backed by powerful datasets, is now capable of crafting narratives that can sometimes match or even surpass those written by humans. This development has impacted creative professionals, particularly Hollywood screenwriters, who last year protested and successfully secured protections against the potential replacement of their roles by AI.
Beyond threatening professional livelihoods, the capacity of AI to produce engaging stories raises concerns about the spread of misinformation. The ease with which AI can generate fake news is troubling, particularly given decades of research indicating that people can be more swayed by stories than by direct arguments or facts.
Academics have embarked on studies to evaluate how AI-generated stories measure up against those created by human authors. The findings indicate that although AI storytelling is impressive, human storytellers, at least for now, maintain an edge.
The strength of stories lies in their ability to transport readers into imaginary worlds, effectively immersing them in new environments and perspectives. This type of engagement not only aids in understanding different viewpoints but also diminishes skepticism, allowing narratives to subtly influence readers.
To ascertain the effectiveness of AI-generated stories, researchers conducted experiments using ChatGPT to produce narratives which were then evaluated by over 2,000 participants. Each story was labelled as either AI-written or human-written, although these labels were sometimes inaccurate.
The results revealed a mixed impact. Participants generally found human-authored stories more 'transporting.' However, AI-generated stories were not questioned more often than their human counterparts, and sometimes faced less scrutiny. Labelling a story as AI-written consistently made it less attractive to participants, prompting greater skepticism regardless of the actual authorship.
Linguistic analysis showed that AI-generated stories often featured longer sentences and paragraphs, while human writers offered more stylistic variety. AI is capable of writing coherently with strong connections between ideas, yet human authors provide a richer narrative experience, potentially due to greater diversity in style.
Key components of an engaging story include good writing, believability, creativity, and lived experience. AI excels at producing fluent and believable narratives but falls short in creativity and personal experience. AI's design favours predictability; its models are built to propose the most probable scenarios based on existing data, trending towards familiarity.
The current conclusions are not definitive regarding whether AI will eventually rival human storytellers in quality. AI's proficiency lies in predictability, akin to the known concept of beauty in averageness, where composite images of average faces are often deemed more attractive. While this feature limits genuine creativity, it can still appeal to audiences due to its familiarity.
For now, writers in fields such as screenwriting and novel creation are secure. AI can tell viable stories but has yet to achieve the depth and nuance of top-tier human storytellers. Nonetheless, as AI technology progresses, the capability of AI to produce compelling stories poses potential challenges, especially if employed in disseminating misinformation.
