The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), a key health assessment body in England, has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to aid medical professionals in identifying broken bones on X-rays. This development is anticipated to significantly enhance diagnostic speed and reduce the strain on healthcare providers, potentially decreasing the necessity for follow-up appointments.
AI's potential to revolutionise medical diagnostics is underscored by research indicating that the technology could lead to faster and more accurate identification of fractures. Recognising the critical need for innovation in this area, NICE is recommending the adoption of four specialised AI tools for urgent care settings throughout England. These tools are designed to support medical professionals by helping to detect fractures that may be overlooked due to the high-pressure environment of emergency departments.
According to NICE, between 3% and 10% of bone fractures are typically missed during initial assessments in emergency departments, making it the most prevalent diagnostic error in such settings. The introduction of AI tools aims to address this issue by providing an additional layer of screening to complement human expertise.
Mark Chapman, the Director of Health Technology at NICE, articulated the potential benefits of incorporating AI into the diagnostic process. "These AI technologies are safe to use and could spot fractures which humans might miss, given the pressure and demands these professional groups work under," Chapman explained. He noted that the AI tools would not be used in isolation but would instead work alongside human clinicians, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care.
