Shotcut Unveils Update 24.10 Featuring AI-Powered Speech to Text Capability
Shotcut, the widely-used open-source video editing software, has launched its latest version, 24.10, marking a significant enhancement with the integration of its first artificial intelligence feature. This update, made available in late October 2023, introduces a new Speech to Text function, which utilises OpenAI’s Whisper technology, thanks to the whisper.cpp project.
The introduction of this Speech to Text feature is notable as it signifies Shotcut's venture into AI-driven functionalities, seeking to enhance user experience through advanced transcription capabilities. Users will find a basic model embedded within the software that can be upgraded by downloading a more comprehensive model to expedite the transcription process. However, users are advised to anticipate occasional errors with this initial AI deployment. Moreover, it is important to note that the current version primarily supports devices with Apple Silicon GPUs.
In addition to the AI feature, Shotcut 24.10 delivers several enhancements in video transition techniques. Noteworthy improvements include the Ripple Delete function, which allows users to restore all clips involved in a transition seamlessly. There is also the Lift feature, which uses non-ripple delete to bridge transition gaps with adjacent clips, along with an enhanced transition duration when repositioning adjacent clips without leaving any gaps.

Various issues have been resolved, including random timeline crashes and a crash linked to opening projects with a subtitle track void of items. Improvements have also been made to the GPS Offset option, the Slideshow Generator dialog, AVCHD video frame rate, the Reframe video filter, and the Time Remap filter.
Users keen on exploring these new features can download Shotcut 24.10 directly from the official website. The software is available as a universal AppImage bundle compatible across most GNU/Linux distributions with no installation required. Additionally, Shotcut is accessible as a Flatpak app via Flathub.
With these developments, Shotcut continues to cement its position as a reliable and feature-rich tool for video editing enthusiasts and professionals alike.
