GomSpace Collaborates with Proteus Space for Pioneering AI-Based Satellite Project

In a groundbreaking collaboration, GomSpace North America has secured a $250,000 (2.6 million SEK) contract to contribute essential components and technical expertise to an innovative satellite mission spearheaded by Proteus Space. The venture seeks to set a world record for the rapid design, assembly, and testing of satellites, leveraging Proteus Space's cutting-edge AI-driven design platform, MERCURY.
Known for its rapid development capabilities in satellite systems, Proteus Space will employ MERCURY to conceptualise the first satellite engineered by artificial intelligence. This demonstration satellite will highlight MERCURY's unique ability to autonomously choose optimal components by assessing factors such as technical suitability, reliability, and flight heritage from a multitude of aerospace vendors. GomSpace was chosen for its proven technological reliability and commendable track record in this domain.
MERCURY's AI-driven platform aims to streamline all phases of satellite development. Proteus Space has ambitious plans to achieve unprecedented speeds in completing the satellite's design, integration, and testing process within a span of just ten months. This timeframe sets a new benchmark for ESPA-class satellite projects. David Kervin, CEO and co-founder of Proteus Space, elaborated on the platform’s functionality, highlighting its advanced parameter settings: "The AI-enabled capabilities of MERCURY automate the custom satellite bus design system, allowing it to autonomously select components from our proprietary database based on TRL level, lead times, cost, performance, and more."
GomSpace's contribution will be central to the mission, providing crucial components for the satellite’s core systems and offering technical guidance to refine performance and system integration. The company’s established expertise and commitment to quality were key factors in their selection. The mission is scheduled for launch in October 2025 and will carry four payloads from government research partners and the University of California, Davis, Center for Spaceflight Research.
