London-based medical technology company Scalpel AI has successfully secured $4.8 million (£3.8 million) in a recent funding round to bolster its international growth and enhance its innovative healthcare solutions. The funding round was spearheaded by Mercia Ventures, with additional participation from Tensor Ventures and a group of private investors.
Founded in 2017 by Dr Yeshwanth Pulijala, who holds a PhD in medical visualisation, Scalpel AI emerged from Dr Pulijala’s intimate understanding of the challenges associated with managing surgical tools. He observed that the inability to efficiently track and manage surgical instruments can lead to significant errors in patient care, emphasising the need for improvement in this aspect of healthcare.
The company's technology leverages advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms to empower healthcare providers by digitally tracking surgical tools and implants. This system is particularly beneficial in situations of staff shortages, ensuring smooth operations from supply warehouses to operating rooms, and back. A pivotal feature of Scalpel AI's technology is its creation of a digital twin for each surgical instrument, enabling precise verification that surgical trays are properly equipped for operations. This innovation stands in contrast to traditional systems that rely on barcodes, RFID tags, and manual checks.
With the freshly acquired funds, Scalpel AI aims to expand its global operations, collaborating with major stakeholders within the healthcare supply chain. These include hospitals, sterile services, and significant third-party logistics entities, such as GlobalMed Logistix.
