Google Launches New AI Tool 'Illuminate' to Aid Researchers with Audio Summaries

The tool was recently tested by a journalist who deals with technology-oriented content. By using their Google account, they uploaded PDF links from arxiv.org — a repository of electronic preprints — into the Illuminate platform. After selecting the option to generate an audio discussion, the process converted a 17-page paper titled "Power to the People? Opportunities and Challenges for Participatory AI" into a brief, conversational audio format. This feature not only summarises the text but also offers a unique listening experience akin to a professional podcast.
Users can access and manage their content through a personal library on the Illuminate website. The library is segmented into Personal and Public sections, depending on the privacy of the generated audio conversations. Content is automatically deleted after 30 days unless saved by the user, ensuring privacy and management of data storage.
The tool allows for up to five audio generations per day, providing ample opportunity for researchers and students to engage with multiple documents daily. The current voice settings are set to a general audience with a medium and semi-professional tone.
