Walmart Integrates AI Innovations to Enhance Holiday Shopping Experience
Walmart, one of the world's largest retail corporations, announced on 30th October its plans to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance the holiday shopping experience for consumers. With the holiday season approaching, the company is implementing several AI and generative AI (GenAI) capabilities to personalise and improve the shopping experience for its customers.
Personalised Shopping Assistance Using AI
The Bentonville-based retail giant is using AI technology to offer personalised shopping suggestions. By analysing consumer behaviour and preferences, Walmart aims to deliver tailored deals and gift ideas to shoppers. For instance, in the United States, customers who have searched for board games previously may now receive notifications on new game releases, promotions, and related gift suggestions. Walmart plans to extend this personalised approach further, enhancing homepages that cater individually to each shopper's interests and past behaviours in the upcoming year.
International Expansion of AI Capabilities
On the global front, Walmart is enhancing its personalisation efforts for its international consumers, focusing specifically on its operations in Mexico. A newly introduced GenAI-based personalisation feature aims to provide Mexico's shoppers with a broader and more diverse array of product recommendations. This technological advance is part of Walmart's commitment to making the shopping journey more intuitive and customer-friendly across its global markets.
AI in Influencer Engagement and Retail Operations
Walmart is also utilising AI to identify and evaluate social media influencers before featuring their content on its website. This approach ensures that influencer-generated content aligns with the company's brand and promotional strategies. Furthermore, Walmart continues to expand its use of AI-powered shopping assistant tools and AI-driven exit technologies at its Sam’s Club locations, directing efforts towards streamlining and boosting efficiency in retail operations.
Competitive AI Strategies in Retail
According to a report by PYMNTS, Walmart, along with its competitor Amazon, is in a race to harness AI to refine retail operations and enhance customer experiences. While both companies use AI to obtain a competitive advantage, their strategies reflect different approaches and business priorities. Walmart emphasises improving the customer's shopping journey through this technology.
CEO Doug McMillon has repeatedly highlighted the significance of AI in refining Walmart's extensive product catalogue. "We’re finding tangible ways to leverage generative AI to improve the customer, member and associate experience," McMillon stated. This includes leveraging both external large language models and developing proprietary capabilities to enhance their offerings.
Shift Towards Smaller AI Models
In a related development, the retail industry sees a shift towards smaller AI models that can efficiently manage operations such as processing purchase orders and shopping data. Steven Sermarini, Senior Director of Engineering, Data and Analytics at Radial, points out that smaller AI models can democratise technology access, allowing small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to optimise inventory, predict consumer demand, and automate processes effectively. These models present a cost-efficient solution compared to massive language models, enabling SMBs to improve operational efficiency and customer service.
As Walmart continues to innovate and integrate AI into its operations, the company aims to create a more seamless and personalised shopping experience for its customers both domestically and internationally, positioning itself strategically in the competitive retail landscape.
