A recent study by GetApp highlights the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) by information technology (IT) and security professionals in the United States to combat the escalating threat of sophisticated cyberattacks. The report reveals that 64% of these professionals consider AI an essential element in their cybersecurity defences.
Focusing on IT and cybersecurity investment strategies, the study noted that 45% of American respondents plan to prioritise AI solutions targeting network and cloud security in their upcoming budgets. This pivot towards AI-powered security comes in light of the growing complexity and frequency of cyber threats. Consequently, a staggering 80% of IT professionals anticipate boosting their cybersecurity budgets significantly by the year 2025.
The integration of AI in cybersecurity has become pervasive, as evidenced by 90% of U.S. companies now utilising AI-assisted security tools to some degree. Among the various AI capabilities deployed, threat detection and monitoring have emerged as the most prevalent. Around 48% of these organisations use AI for real-time monitoring, while 46% have employed it for advanced malware detection. Additionally, 43% incorporate threat intelligence integration, and 41% utilise AI for automating routine cybersecurity tasks.
The report not only sheds light on current trends but also puts forward several recommendations aimed at IT leaders to maximise the benefits of AI technology in enhancing their cybersecurity frameworks. Firstly, it underscores the importance of planning around AI's inherent strengths in countering cyber threats. By setting clear objectives for AI use, organisations can focus on areas where AI can most effectively reinforce security, such as network and cloud protection and thorough threat analysis.
Furthermore, the report advocates for the human-in-the-loop (HITL) approach, stressing the necessity of human expertise alongside AI technology. This duality is crucial to prevent potential errors and to adhere strictly to ethical AI practices. The document suggests augmenting staff training to empower employees to leverage AI tools confidently and competently.
Lastly, the report highlights the critical role of data management in successful AI deployment. For organisations to prepare effectively for AI integration, they must ensure the availability of quality data suitable for training AI systems. This includes deciding on the use of either public or proprietary data sets and prioritising data management to maintain data in an organised, readable, and accurate format.
