The project has been disrupted by the discovery of a rare bee species on the proposed development site, raising concerns around environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg had spearheaded the ambitious plan, intending to partner with an existing nuclear power plant operator to ensure a supply of emissions-free electricity. In a recent series of moves, Microsoft announced the reactivation of a dormant nuclear facility at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, while Amazon committed $650 million towards establishing a data centre adjacent to the Susquehanna Steam Electric nuclear plant, also in Pennsylvania. In a similar vein, Google has declared its plans to purchase power from Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors.
